Dumbledore was dead in the 7th book, and they had more impending things to worry about and not just about Umbridge. Sure, she was nasty, but the Ministry was corrupt already.

Who would believe the word of fifteen year old witches and wizards? Especially with all the propoganda around that particular group. If the ministry didn’t want people to believe them, then people won’t.
I think that was a point JK was trying to make–How corrupt the Ministry was.

Even if someone did tell Scrimgeour, I don’t think that he would have believed them.

Umbridge was in cahoots with the baddies. If the Minister wasn’t exactly with them, he was at least heavily under their influence. Dumbledore was trying to take care of the situation on his own, and was *ahem* unavailable to do anything after Book 6.
The sad thing is, I’ve had a professor who seemed to have a teaching philosophy very similar to Umbridge’s: "Oh no, you won’t actually be USING this nasty stuff, I’m just going to beat you over the head with theory and a bit of skewed history."

I think she was just too like… buddy-buddy with too many of the top-ranking people, and also like.. people keep going back and forth on whether or not Dumbledore and Harry are nuts.

hmmmmm… that is a VERY good question

I know!!! I think about that all the time!!!
She probably conned Rufus to smooth things over. And the Thicknesse was under the imperius curse so he didn’t care … the main thing is Scrimgeour. No one probably cared because all Dumby wanted most was her outta Hogwarts …

During the 7th book, Voldemort controlled the ministry of magic. Scrimgeour died a month before Harry, Ron, and Hermione went to the ministry to steal the locket from her. That was plenty of time for Umbridge to get hired. Also, if you remember, Scrimgeour didn’t really get along with Harry or Dumbledore.
This is from HP Lexicon:
Muggle-born repression and finally, justice
WHEN THE DEATH EATERS TOOK OVER THE MINISTRY, Umbridge found herself among like-minded people. She developed the policy of sending Muggle-born wizards to Azkaban and chaired the Muggle-born Registration Commission (DH13). Umbridge may have had worries that her own ancestral background would not stand up to scrutiny. She purchased the stolen Slytherin locket and passed it off as a Selwyn family heirloom (DH10, 13). After the war, she was arrested and charged with crimes against Muggle-borns. She was sent to Azkaban (BLC).

I agree! Maybe Harry and Dumbledore had more important things to worry about than getting Umbridge in trouble (like trying to find the horcruxes.) I’m sure they could have told the Minister what happened, but who knows if he would have done anything anyway. Plus, Umbridge seems to be the kind of person who could manipulate her way into staying at a job. But I agree- she should have been sacked! Or better yet, the Centaurs should have just killed her.
